'Pek çok fizikçi, John Bell'in teoreminin gizli değişkenlerin varlığını çürüttüğünü iddia eder.

Ancak Bell'in amacı gizli değişken teorilerini dışlamak değildi.

Bu durum, Erwin Schrödinger'in ünlü "kedi" düşünce deneyini hatırlatıyor.

— Tim Maudlin, "Kuantum Teorisinin Sorunu | Tim Maudlin"

A lot of physicists claim that John Bell’s theorem disproves the existence of hidden variables. If you look at the historical record, however, physicists already “decided” hidden variables were disproved decades before Bell published his famous theorem.

The origin where it was solidified probably goes back to the 1927 Solvay Conference. Niels Bohr made a philosophical argument in this conference that the observer cannot separate themselves from the system that they are trying to observe, something he called the principle of complementarity, and the consequence is that hidden variables are conceptually impossible.

He pretty much managed to convince everyone in the room except for Albert Einstein.

The fact that you could trivially introduce hidden variables to quantum mechanics was first noticed by Louis de Broglie who presented it at this conference, however, his ideas were ridiculed and this led him to abandon them. Even Einstein, who was one of the only ones not convinced of the fundamentality of quantum theory, criticized de Broglie’s proposals for being underdeveloped.

Indeed, Louis de Broglie did not put a lot of thought into the model he was presenting, and so he answered the questions people proposed to him very poorly, and ultimately left a bad impression on everyone in the room. He, again, ended up abandoning that avenue after the conference.

Bohr would go onto give a lecture tin the Volta Conference that would be published in Nature in 1928 where he develops his idea of the complementarity as being due to measurement disturbance.

Since everyone left convinced that there are no hidden variables (except for Einstein), this started to become the standard way quantum mechanics would be talked about. This inspired the mathematician John von Neumann to try and solidify the argument with a proof, which he published in his book Mathematical Foundations of Quantum Mechanics in 1932.

Albert Einstein responded to this by trying to give a mathematical proof of his own against this growing consensus. He partnered with the physicists Boris Podolsky and Nathan Rosen to publish a paper in 1935 titled “Can Quantum-Mechanical Description of Physical Reality be Considered Complete?” In this paper, they point out that if we treat the statistical nature of quantum mechanics as fundamental, then it inevitably violates causal locality. Ergo, if you believe in causal locality, then it follows that quantum mechanics cannot be considered a complete theory of nature, that it is not fundamental.

In the same year, Niels Bohr responded with his own paper of the same title attempting to defend the notion that quantum mechanics is a complete theory of nature, reiterating his points regarding complementarity. It is less clear in this paper if he is still arguing that complementarity is due to measurement disturbance or not.

Louis de Broglie’s realization that quantum mechanics is compatible with hidden variables was so trivial that, despite it being entirely rejected by most physicists and forgotten, it was quickly rediscovered by the physicist David Bohm in 1952, which he published in a paper “A Suggested Interpretation of the Quantum Theory in Terms of ‘Hidden’ Variables.’”

However, by this point, Bohm had already been exiled from the USA during the Red Scare due to having Marxist sympathies and was living in Brazil. He never did move back to the USA, later settling in the UK. He did meet with Einstein to try and present the theory to him, but Einstein did not like it and regarded it as “cheap.”

John Bell spent much of his career interested in the foundations of quantum mechanics, which led to him to take interest in the feud between Einstein and Bohr. After discovering Bohm’s paper, he was rather confused at how confident all his colleagues were that hidden variables were impossible despite Bohm’s paper literally proving they are possible.

In 1964, he publishes his own response to Einstein et al’s paper titled “On the Einstein Podolsky Rosen Paradox” where he finally presents his famous theorem. From studying Bohm’s theory, he realizes that the theory is “grossly nonlocal,” to the point that it is not even compatible with special relativity. What he proves in that paper is that, with some fairly reasonable assumptions, any hidden variable theory must be “grossly nonlocal.”

However, Bell’s intention was not to rule out hidden variable theories. He believed that they were plausible, but only if they were nonlocal, and so Bell concluded that the paper by Einstein, Podolsky, and Rosen are wrong in using the violation of causal locality they identified as evidence for hidden variables, because adding hidden variables would only deepen the nonlocality.

In 1966, John Bell published a paper titled “On the Problem of Hidden Variables in Quantum Mechanics” where he shows that von Neumann’s proof, while containing no mathematical errors, makes a bizarre assumption which makes no physical sense, and when you drop the assumption, it becomes clear that the proof fails to rule out hidden variables, which is why a theory like Bohm’s is possible.

In 1982, he would publish a paper titled “On the Impossible Pilot Wave” where he criticizes his colleagues for seemingly burying Bohm’s theory (which was a rediscovery of de Broglie’s theory) and continuing to teach that hidden variables are disproved even though Bohm had clearly showed mathematically that they are not, as long as you are wiling to accept nonlocality.

In 1990, Bell published an article “Against ‘Measurement’” where he shows that an explanation of quantum mechanics invoking measurement disturbance, which seemed to be implied by Bohr’s interpretation of quantum mechanics, is not actually compatible with quantum mechanics, because it is ambiguous without mathematically defining what constitutes a measurement, and any definition you give requires additional mathematics to the theory, so the theory cannot be considered complete if you believe in measurement disturbance.

Despite contemporary physicists often claiming Bell “disproved” hidden variable theories, Bell spent much of his career attacking the so-called disproofs of hidden variable theories, once writing that, “may Louis de Broglie continue to inspire those who suspect that what is proved by impossibility proofs is lack of imagination.” He did not view the nonlocality in de Broglie and Bohm’s theories to be a problem, but instead a clever trick to get around the difficulty of adding hidden variables to quantum mechanics.

Yet, despite this being Bell’s own view, despite all the papers and books he published attacking the consensus that formed regarding hidden variables, his legacy would still go on to be taught as if he somehow was the guy who disproved hidden variables.

This is reminiscent of Erwin Schrödinger’s famous “cat” thought experiment. He published this in a paper titled “The Present Situation in Quantum Mechanics,” and it was meant to criticize the idea that the quantum state is a fundamental description of the ontology of the system.

The argument was, if we believe this for individual particles, then we can use that particle in a chain reaction that would affect a macroscopic system, like a cat, and so we also have to believe that for a cat, that a cat can exist in superposition of states of dead and alive at the same time.

Schrödinger thought this was too silly to believe, so we should reject the idea for individual particles as well. But people took his thought experiment and started to teach it as if he was arguing in favor of thinking about quantum mechanics in that way.

Bell has been abused like that as well. He was basically a career-long advocate of hidden variable theories and published several papers, articles, and books defending them, but is taught as the guy who “disproved” them.

There has been quite literally a conspiracy in academia to suppress such a possibility of such a model, something Bell himself commented on at the time.

But why then had Born not told me of this "pilot wave?" If only to point out what was wrong with it? Why did von Neumann not consider it? More extraordinarily, why did people go on producing "impossibility" proofs, after 1952, and as recently as 1978? When even Pauli, Rosenfeld, and Heisenberg, could produce no more devastating criticism of Bohm's version than to brand it as "metaphysical" and "ideological?" Why is the pilot wave picture ignored in text books? Should it not be taught, not as the only way, but as an antidote to the prevailing complacency? To show that vagueness, subjectivity, and indeterminism are not forced on us by experimental facts, but by deliberate theoretical choice?

— John Bell, “On the Impossible Pilot Wave”

There are some people who literally are good at wielding institutional power. And in academia, you know, you have to get a position — you have to get tenure. If you’re a physicist and you’re interested in these foundational questions, it will kill your career…you could not get a job if you said, “I’m interested in the foundations of quantum mechanics.” Not in a physics department, you could get one in a philosophy department, and maybe you could get one in a math department as a mathematical physicist. And the hardest place was in a physics department.

— Tim Maudlin, “The Problem With Quantum Theory | Tim Maudlin”

I experienced this directly myself. I posted a paper for the purpose of discussion on /r/askphysics. I was immediately permanently banned. The paper was titled “Why interference phenomena do not capture the essence of quantum theory” published in the peer-reviewed journal Quantum which I thought was fairly interesting.

I was confused so I messaged a moderator asking why I was banned. I was told that it is because one of the four physicists who authored the paper is Robert Spekkens at the University of Waterloo, and one of the moderators personally hated the physicist. Why? You can see below the response they gave me. They hate him because he had published other papers defending hidden variables.

I don’t know what “all evidence against them” is even referring to here since they did not let me follow-up, since there has been no “evidence against them” since Bell’s theorem, which was already established by Bell himself that his own theorem does not rule out hidden variables, only local hidden variables.

They call him a “pariah” and say they can’t wait for him to die off simply because of the papers he publishes. He further claims that this is something agreed upon by the “physics community,” that most physicists agree that he is a “pariah” for daring to investigate models with hidden variables, and later this moderator would claim to me that they are themselves a physicist in academia.

That is a perfect demonstration of the mentality of contemporary academia when it comes to hidden variables. They have not actually been ruled out, but claiming they have been ruled out has become kind of a religious tradition where everyone is shamed into pretending they have been ruled out and anyone who suggests otherwise is deemed a “pariah.”

David Bohm was not only exiled from the USA during the Red Scare due to his Marxist sympathies, but the fact he was investigating hidden variable theories also made him into a “pariah.” It did not matter all the good work he did in other fields. Physicists in academia were and still are obsessed with the idea of purging any implication that there may be hidden variables.

I don’t even write all this as a person who believes in hidden variables. I am not exactly convinced of their existence, either. But physicists have transformed their opposition to them as a religious cult, a cult that John Bell annd David Bohm tried and failed to break, and their legacy has largely been tarnished because of it.

Even if you are such a great physicist you literally win the Nobel prize, it does not matter. The Nobel Laureate Gerard 't Hooft would go on to develop hidden variable models and has been treated as a “pariah” for it as well. It’s all a bit ridiculous, and learning all this made my opinion of the physics community plummet, as the idea that they are all simply committed to truth is clearly false, and many physicists will happily lie to your face and misrepresent the physics to push their own personal beliefs.
